RICHMOND's gamble on teenage recruit Troy Taylor could be in danger of backfiring even before the pacy forward's first pre-season at Punt Road.

Taylor, 18, is the subject of a police investigation in the Northern Territory after an incident in Alice Springs on New Year's Eve.

Police spokeswoman Theresa Kuilboer said yesterday that no arrests had been made, but police were investigating an incident "involving several people" in which three males aged 33, 39 and 47 were injured.

Richmond has told the AFL about the matter and released a statement saying it "takes any allegation of player misbehaviour very seriously", but would not comment until after the police investigation.

Taylor was taken by the Tigers with pick 51 in last year's national draft after interest was also shown by Collingwood, Fremantle, Port Adelaide and North Melbourne.

The Gold Coast, which for the moment has first option on young Queensland and NT players, was also interested, but Taylor opted to try his luck in the draft.

He was picked up by the Tigers less than a year after spending four months in a juvenile detention centre in Darwin.

Before the draft he spoke to The Sunday Age about the night he helped some friends rob a service station, being placed on a good-behaviour bond and getting into fights, which ultimately led to him being locked up.

Taylor was still on parole when he entered the November national draft and his management worked with the AFL and AFL Players' Association to help facilitate his transfer interstate.

His athleticism, ball handling and ability to win contested possession caught the eye of recruiters.

Pakistan have dropped vice-captain Kamran Akmal among four changes to their Test team as they seek to avoid a series clean sweep by Australia.

Rookie wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed will make his debut at Hobart's Bellerive Oval in the third Test, starting on Thursday, after Kamran was forced to fall on his sword.

The tourists' manager, Adbul Raquib, said the four-man selection panel, which includes Kamran, voted unanimously to drop the incumbent wicketkeeper-batsman after his dreadful second Test display at the SCG.

Former captain Shoaib Malik and Khurram Manzoor have been promoted at the expense of struggling batsmen Faisal Iqbal and Misbah-ul-Haq while young paceman Mohammad Aamer returns in place of Mohammad Sami.

Johnson quick to bolster unlucky Siddle

Mitchell Johnson regards it as part of his duty as leader of the Australian attack to nurse Peter Siddle back into the wickets at the end of a summer in which the Victorian quick has been plagued by bad luck and niggling injury.

After bursting onto the international scene with 49 wickets at 28.93 in his first year, Siddle has back-pedalled during a frustrating home season that thus far has produced only six wickets at an average of 68.33 in four Tests.

Costa confident Ablett won't walk

GEELONG president Frank Costa believes superstar Gary Ablett is almost certain to follow his heart and remain a Cat. And while the Gold Coast has snared Ablett's reclusive younger brother, Nathan, to play in the VFL this year, Costa doesn't believe this will have an impact because he doesn't think the younger Ablett will resume an AFL career.

"Unfortunately, Nathan won't play AFL football again, in my opinion," he said. "I don't think he will because of the pressure that goes with it [the AFL], or the media focus that comes on you, or the very heavy training that you have to go through in the pre-season etcetera."

As the Cats prepare to return to pre-season training this week, speculation about Ablett's future will remain the talking point until he re-signs with the Cats or is lured away by the bulging pay packet offered by the fledgling Gold Coast club.

The Gold Coast is understood to be able to offer Ablett $1.6 million a year to join from 2011, with Costa this week admitting the salary-cap squeezed Cats would likely be able to offer "about $500,000" less.

Ablett and his manager attempted to hold a secret meeting with Gold Coast officials in December but were spotted by Port Adelaide players, as revealed in The Age.

Geelong has remained hopeful Ablett would remain a Cat, despite him rejecting the chance to re-sign in the past year. But Costa is now convinced Ablett, in his "heart of hearts", wants to be a one-club player.
